TRIPS FOR APRIL ARE!!

DAY TRIPS

1.   APRIL

WEEKEND OVERNIGHTER    2 THIS MONTH

1.      Homosassa River Trip   April 15-16-17

The information below is from last year the only possible change would be the pricing
Phone numbers, emails, links and etc should all still be the same.

Our first overnight boating trip of the year will be to the Homosassa Riverside Resort.  It is a short days ride up to the beautiful spring fed Homosassa River and a ride up the winding river through the coastal marsh to a nice resort and marina complete with a river’s edge restaurant and deck where you can relax and watch the passing boats and view the activities on “Monkey Island”.

For a leisurely afternoon you can boat up to the headwaters of the river where one of the largest herds of West Indian manatees in the state gather over the springs.  At nearby Homosassa Springs State Wildlife Park you can walk down into an underwater observation area and see manatees as well as both fresh and salt water species of fish swim in the same brackish water.  The park features Florida Panther, alligators, crocodile, manatee, deer, flamingos and other animals and birds of prey.

Be careful to stay in the marked channel when entering the river as exposed limestone bedrock likes to eat propellers.   On previous trips some of our members have taken bicycle rides up to the nearby Yulee Sugar Mill Ruins. David Yulee built the first railroad between Fernandina and Cedar Key.  In 1841, he became the first Senator from Florida, but supported the Confederate states with sugar, guns, and ammunition until Union troops burned his mansion at Margarita and destroyed his sugar mill.

The Margarita Grill on the river serves giant margaritas, and on Saturday night they show a September 11th memorial film with flag waving and patriotic songs.  While patrons don't have to agree with the owners conservative political views, they will be asked to leave if they speak negatively about the United States. In fact, anything French is banned from the restaurant, French fries are dubbed American fries.

   STEINHATCHEE INVASION
JULY 29th-AUG 3rd  2012

This trip has become our biggest. Last year we had over 100 people on this trip, they were club members, families and friends, and a great time was had by all. You can visit our photo album and check it out.    Some of our  group  will again be staying at Pace’s Cottages.  Fiddlers Sunset Condos (352) 498 0860 may have a room or two if needed.

MAKE YOUR DECISIONS AND RESERVATIONS EARLY IN THE YEAR,
THIS TRIP SELLS OUT VERY QUICKLY !!!!!!!!

If you are taking your boat, you must make a slip reservation with the Sea Hag Marina (352) 498-3008

below is 2011 info      2012 info will be posted as soon as it is finalized
NOTE FROM OUR TRIP LEADER, BOB

Steinhatchee Awaits Us!!

Our arrival and activities schedule will be alittle different from previous years so this is an attempt to bring you up-to-date. Grady captains and their families will be staying at three different locations: The Sea Hag Marina, Sunset Place and the River Haven Marina. Arrival dates begin on Sunday, July 24th, with others coming on Monday. On Monday, July 25th at 7:00 PM we will have our usual family cookout with each family bringing the following: meat of your choice to grill, a side dish to share, charcoal, drinks, utensils, paper plates and napkins. Insect repellent may be useful. In case of rain, Paces will provide shelters on the grounds. Some grills will be available but we strongly suggest that you bring your own portable grill, or arrange to cook with someone who does.

Wednesday night, the 27th, at 7:00 PM we will have our "Bubbaques BBQ" on the waterfront of the Sea Hag Marina. Cost will be $9.00 per adult and $6.50 per child under eight. Each family will be responsible for their own drinks. If you will be attending the BBQ, " PLEASE " send in your check by July 10th to our treasurer, Bill Eckerle, 5433 Oakhurst Dr. Seminole, FL 33772.

The River Haven Marina, 1110 River View Dr, just south of the bridge, where some of us are staying and will have our boats, is a full service marina and offers a lift service for launching and retrieving boats. The cost is $1.00 per foot for "in and out". So if your boat is 25' , your total charge would be $25.00. Their tel. # is (352)498-0709.

So now we are out in the beautiful waters in our boats having a glorious time. Let's hoist our red flags, hit the water and "catch 'em up"!! BUT we must be ever thinking about safety. Upon arriving at your diving location, slow down and watch out for swimmers and divers in your area. Look for the red diving flags and be aware that many divers do not stay close to their boats. In 2009 a diver was run over and killed in the same area we will be. Also, watch the tide movement....the waters are shallow and if the tide is going out, you may get caught and grounded. Several times some have had to jump in and push!! SO BE ALERT and THINK SAFETY at all times.

Scallop limits: Two gallons per person in the shell, with a max. of ten gallons per boat, or one pint of scallop meat per person, with a max. of 1/2 gallon per boat. A 2011 salt water license is required. We have been told that if you have ATT or Horizons, your cell phone service will be best. Otherwise you might have to go to the bridge to make your calls. Be safe travelling to and from Steinhatchee....we look forward to seeing everyone....and our adventure will be a success only after all members and friends return home happy and safe with lots of scallops to enjoy! If you have any questions, call me at (727) 531-5367.

See ya soon......Bob
