WEEKEND OVERNIGHTER

1.      Homosassa River Trip   April 23-24-25

The information below is from last your the only possible change would be the pricing
Phone numbers, emails, links and etc should all still be the same.

Our first overnight boating trip of the year will be to the Homosassa Riverside Resort.  It is a short days ride up to the beautiful spring fed Homosassa River and a ride up the winding river through the coastal marsh to a nice resort and marina complete with a river’s edge restaurant and deck where you can relax and watch the passing boats and view the activities on “Monkey Island”.

For a leisurely afternoon you can boat up to the headwaters of the river where one of the largest herds of West Indian manatees in the state gather over the springs.  At nearby Homosassa Springs State Wildlife Park you can walk down into an underwater observation area and see manatees as well as both fresh and salt water species of fish swim in the same brackish water.  The park features Florida Panther, alligators, crocodile, manatee, deer, flamingos and other animals and birds of prey.

Be careful to stay in the marked channel when entering the river as exposed limestone bedrock likes to eat propellers.   On previous trips some of our members have taken bicycle rides up to the nearby Yulee Sugar Mill Ruins. David Yulee built the first railroad between Fernandina and Cedar Key.  In 1841, he became the first Senator from Florida, but supported the Confederate states with sugar, guns, and ammunition until Union troops burned his mansion at Margarita and destroyed his sugar mill.

The Margarita Grill on the river serves giant margaritas, and on Saturday night they show a September 11th memorial film with flag waving and patriotic songs.  While patrons don't have to agree with the owners conservative political views, they will be asked to leave if they speak negatively about the United States. In fact, anything French is banned from the restaurant, French fries are dubbed American fries.

Sea Hag Marina: 352-498-3008

Hello Tampa Bay Grady-White Boating Club members;

Bob and Jeannie Rice want you to know that the Sea Haag Marina in Steinhatchiee has three cottages (Pace’s Cottages) left for the July 22-26th, 2009, scalloping trip.  Please ask for “Libbie” at Sea Haag (352) 498-3008.  Make separate reservations for boat slips at Sea Haag if you take your boat.   (Pace’s cottages are “rustic” but conveniently located in a grove of palm and oak trees just across the road from the marina.

Bob thinks that the Pelican Point Inn (same property as Fiddlers Restaurant) may have rooms/suites which are more modern, but located a couple of blocks from Sea Haag.  Their number is (352) 498-7427.

Better make your reservations soon, as most motels fill up in Steinhatchiee during the peak scallop season.  Please let Bob know if you plan to attend.

Greg Arterburn.

Note from our trip leader, BOB

   STEINHATCHEE INVASION
JULY 21nd-JULY 25th

Best Regards, Bob Rice

This trip has become our biggest. Last year we had 93 people on this trip, they were club members, families and friends, and a great time was had by all. You can visit our photo album and check it out.    Bob Rice is our trip leader. For more information, please contact Bob Rice at (727) 442-9538 or (727) 531-5367 or E-mail to BJRICE@AOL.COM. We will again be staying at Pace’s Cottages.  Fiddlers Sunset Condos (352) 498 0860 may have a room or two if needed.

MAKE YOUR DECISIONS AND RESERVATIONS EARLY IN THE YEAR,
THIS TRIP SELLS OUT VERY QUICKLY !!!!!!!!

If you are taking your boat, you must make a slip reservation with the Sea Hag Marina (352) 498-3008

Steinhatchiee Scallop Invasion   2009 regs
This is the summer fun trip for kids & adults, July 25th to 30th.  The hot summer sun can make fishing along the Big Bend of Florida somewhat miserable, but there is an enjoyable activity that will keep you nice and cool. Scalloping is a cool activity in the midsummer's heat because you actually get into the water and swim after them. The scalloping out of Steinhatchee is very good at that time of year. The folks at Sea Hag Marina in Steinhatchee (352-498-3008) can help you get started if you have never done this before. You will need to buy a recreational saltwater fishing license before you catch scallops, and you are limited to 2 gallons of whole scallops per person with a maximum of 10 gallons per boat. If you clean the scallops before returning to the dock, the limit is 1 pint of scallop meats per person with a maximum of 1/2 gallon per boat. Unless the scallops are running large, the 2 gallon whole scallop limit cleans out to considerably less than 1 pint of meats. The only equipment you need are a mask, swim fins, and a snorkel, plus a mesh bag for your catch

Favorite spots include 6 miles north, 2-3 miles south, 4-5 miles south (Rocky Creek) and 6-7 miles south (Pepperfish Keys). Then they slowly motor inshore to a water depth of 3 feet or so while staring at the bottom looking for scallops (it helps to wear polarized sunglasses). The immediate vicinity of any large collection of boats is usually a good place to begin, for at peak scallop season 100 or more boats will be on the best spots. Don't worry about all those boats. Scallops have been abundant in recent years and limits easy to come by. Just keep moving around until you find an area that has not been picked over, all the while maintaining a good lookout so you don't run over any snorkelers who often stray well away from their anchored boats. Scallops seem to prefer areas of bottom covered by the thin, round bladed type of sea grass more than the flat, broad-bladed turtle grass. Patches of brown algae are also favorite hiding places. Once a few scallops are seen laying on top of the sea grasses, drop the anchor, put up a dive flag (it's the law), and go get 'em. Scallops are easier to find when the sun is high overhead. If a tidal current is running, swim up current so you can look down, end-on between the blades of the sea grasses that have been pushed over onto their sides by the current.

Once you have caught your scallops, cleaning them can be a chore, but Sea Hag Marina has an excellent cleaning facility, and there are usually folks around to show you how it is done, or better yet, clean your scallops for a small fee. Have Fun! (reproduced in part from the Sea Hag web page—which has lots of useful information for those going on the Scallop Invasion.
